Guild Esports PLC (LSE:GILD, OTC:GULDF) has created its sixth professional e-sports team, with three “top tier” players signed to compete in Apex Legends, a free-to-play hero shooter game.

The company said the team is ranked within the top ten in Europe, comprising Matej Fekonja, known as ‘MaTaFe’; Juho Sillanpa, known ‘Silta’; and Younes Elkherrat ‘Horizxon’; from Slovenia, Finland and the UK respectively.

All three have signed one-year salaried contracts with performance incentives, with an option to renew for another year.

“The team will benefit from Guild’s proven world-class coaching and development,” it said.

The first competition under the Guild banner will be the newly established Apex Legends Global Series, starting on 16 October with a prize pool of US$5mln and consistently ranked in the top five most-viewed on the Twitch platform.

With players of Apex Legends surpassing 100mln in 2020, according to EA, Guild said it believes there is potential for it to see significant growth and that its investment in this team “will contribute to a further increase in its network audience and open up multiple new revenue opportunities for the long term”.

Kal Hourd, Guild’s chief executive, said: “From the beginning, our goal has always been to bring together the best and most entertaining esports players to build an organisation that excites fans, attracts brands and provides teams with the opportunity to develop into champions. Our new Apex team incorporates this ambition entirely, allowing us to continue disrupting the industry with advancements into new tournaments and representing Europe as a true force in Apex Legends.”
